In March 1943, the battleships Scharnhorst and Tirpitz, along with cruiser Lützow were relocated to Altafjorden for repairs. Scharnhorst and Lützow was stationed in Langfjorden while Tirpitz was in Kåfjorden. Today, only foundations that Scharnhorst was moored in and tells a little war history.
Both foundations are directly north of Sopnes and Langfjorden church.
Langfjorden is a fjord of the larger Altafjorden. The ships were ordered to halt the flow of goods from the Allied forces to the Soviet Union. Arctic Task Force as the fleet was called, numbered at most 10,000 men.
