The island is made of sandstone and slatestone and measures approximately 900 times 650 meters.
It has steep cliffs on the west side, while the eastern side slopes down to the sea. Gathers formed on this side of a half island, Large «Avløysinga». Little «Avløysinga» is an smal island located just south of Hornøya. On the west side, between Hornøya and the neighbor island Reinøya is Prestholmen. Hornøya has one of the largest seabird colonies. In the steep hillsides hedges totaling more than 40,000 pairs of razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins, shags and guillemots and. Otherwise, on the island (and Reinøya) nest large amounts gråmåser and black-backed gulls. Other bird species are ruff, wagtails and a pair of ravens. Especially polar guillemot attracts bird enthusiasts from afar. The island has since 1983 been protected as Hornøya and Reinøya nature reserve. At various places on Hornøya finds remains of German building construction from World War II.

There is a live theater production about nature’s raw beauty. . Gray seals are patrolling the waters, and a variety of whale and dolphin species have been observed from the island, among other orca been watching every year. The island is easily accessible with a convenient boat that goes on a regular service to Vardø. One can stay inside the city and travel trips and get the whole big bird experiences. Since the birds are protected and largely feel safe, you can get realy close and can get a lot of exciting pictures.
Det er båttransport til øya. Du kan komme ut på formiddagen og reise tilbake på ettermiddagen. Båten lander like under fuglefjellet så det er bare å åpne fotobagen med en gang du ankommer. Transporten fra Vardø til Hornøya ta ca 10 minutter.
There are boat transfers to the island. You can come out to the island in the morning and return in the afternoon. The boat lands just below the bird cliff so it’s just to open camera bag as soon as you arrive. The transport from Vardo to Hornøya take about 10 minutes.
